Cascadian Meetings

Monthly meetings are held the last Wednesday of each month at 7:30 PM in the Meyer Auditorium at Living Care Retirement Community at 3801 Summitview Ave. Guests and drop-ins are always welcome. The meetings are informal, with a brief business session followed by a short slide program presented by a member or guest speaker. Subjects range from wildflowers and backpack trips to ice climbs and cross country skiing. A social hour after the program provides members and friends the opportunity to plan outings and arrange participation in and sign up for official club outings. During the social hour the Refreshment Committee serves punch and goodies. Members are asked to volunteer to bring cookies, brownies, or other such treats.

The club has three special meetings during the year: a banquet in January, an equipment swap-sale in April, and a potluck picnic in July. Details are always announced in the Newsletter well in advance of these events.

January

Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008 at 6:00 PM in Meyer Auditorium at Living Care Retirement Community at 3801 Summitview Ave.
Just when you thought it was safe to come out of the dining room... its time for the annual Cascadians Winter Potluck! Worry about sticking to that New Year Resolution next week. Bring a dish to share as well as some plates and utensils. Coffee, tea and punch will be provided. Its mid-winter, and you need all the calories you can hold to see you through to springtime.
Following our potluck, Alan Bauer, prolific photographer for PNW hiking guides, will share photos and stories from his recent books. You’ve undoubtedly seen Bauers work in Best Desert Hikes: Washington; Dayhiking: Snoqulmie Region; and Day Hiking: South Cascades. Come out and enjoy a good meal and a great show.

February

Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008 at 7:30 PM in Meyer Auditorium at Living Care Retirement Community at 3801 Summitview Ave.
Following our general business meeting, Ron Hicks, Project Manager for the Hanford Reach, will give an overview of the Reach and the status of constructing an interpretive center at Columbia Point in Richland. The center will provide education and public programs.

March

Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at 7:30 PM in Meyer Auditorium at Living Care Retirement Community at 3801 Summitview Ave.
Following our general business meeting, noted photographer David Hagen will reeducate us on identifying wild spring flowers. David is well know to many Cascadians not only for his stunning photography, but also his deep knowledge of local natural history, including, and especially, wildflowers.

April

Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at 7:30 PM in Meyer Auditorium at Living Care Retirement Community at 3801 Summitview Ave.
A couple important business items will transpire at the April meeting. 1) a couple of proposed policy changes regarding the Distinguished Service Award and Honorary Life Membership will be presented and voted upon. See related article below. 2) The 2007 Cascadian Annuals will be handed out. Again, see the related article to the right.
Following our general business meeting and safety talk, Gary Koehler will make a presentation on his study of the LYNX. Gary is a research biologist with the WDFW working out of the Cle Elum office. He has studied cats throughout the world. Have you ever seen a lynx in the wild?
