CASCADIAN OUTINGS


Cascadian Activities
Cascadian sponsored activities include mountaineering, hiking, backpacking, cross-country skiing,snowshoeing,bicycling, canoeing, kayaking, and whitewater rafting. All participants must contact the trip leader and obtain permission. All participants of a club-sponsored outing are required to read and sign a release of liability form; participants under the age of 18 must have a parental signature on the release form; those under the age of 14 must also be accompanied by a responsible adult. Club outings are for Cascadian members and their guests only. Refer to your Cascadian newsletter for a meeting time and place.

TUESDAY HIKERS: Meet at 40th Ave Bi-Mart at 8:00 AM, Tuesdays. In November they will begin meeting at 9:00 AM. Upper-easy to Advanced trips. Usually a “fast” and “slower” group. Switches to skiing and snowshoeing when snow arrives. For a complete schedule of hikes, pick up a yellow Dayhike Schedule at a regular monthly meeting.

TUESDAY TOO and SUPER POKIE HIKES: Cascadians are welcome to participate in alternate Tuesday and Thursday hikes. These hikes (ski/snowshoe in season) are generally rated as “intermediate.” Destination and departure times are determined by consensus the day before or morning of the hike.


The POKIES
Hikes of 4 to 8 miles with no great elevation gain. May include x-country skiing or snowshoeing in winter. Call leader in advance.

Another Note to All Pokies:
The Super (alternate) Pokies are a separate group and generally plan outings via e-mail. Regular Pokies can find the Pokies outing schedule in this newsletter and in the H-R Tuesday Outdoors section. Call the leader or Jean Crawford for possible changes.

 

June 25 NEW!! Manastash Lake Trail

Meet: 8:00 AM at 40th Ave Bi-Mart (NOTE EARLY DEPARTURE)
Four-mile round trip to Lost Lake through a forest of larch and evergreens and meadows. An abundance of wildflowers. Elevation gain about 300’. Bring lunch, water, hiking poles, flower guide, camera, Golden Age Passport or NW Forest Pass.

Through the woods and along the river starting across from Hell’s Crossing CG. Lunch, water, usual stuff. Golden Age Passport. Call Grace.

July 16 Sourdough Ridge, Sunrise

The Johns’ traditional hike with options for Dege Pk, Frozen Lake, visitor center, bookstore, ICE CREAM CONES. Call.

July 23 Burroughs Mtn., Sunrise

Meet: 8:00 AM at 40th Ave Bi-Mart (another early departure)
Mary will take short-distance hikers to Emmons Vista and back to Shadow Lake for lunch. Marion will take distance hikers on to Burroughs. More ice cream cones at Sunrise. Must call one of the leaders.

July 30 Naches Peak/Dewey Lake

Meet: 8:30 AM at 40th Ave Bi-Mart
Mary Will lead her always popular hike around Naches Peak Loop and Jon will take the sturdier hikers down to Dewey Lake and back. Lunch, water, proper equipment, Golden Age Passport. Call the leader you wish to hike with.

Cascadian Trail Maintenance Projects
Two days of volunteer trail work on supervised projects earns you a Northwest Forest Pass good for 12 months. Work is available or all abilities.  Interested Cascadians contact Bill Munson @ 697-7128 or Munsonjb@charter.net.


BACKPACKING

An easy early season outing to replace the AT Class field trips. Destinations under consideration are Russell Ridge, Upper Esmeralda Basin, or Eightmile Lake. Destination will depend on snow conditions & party size.

A hike in the Teanaway area that features open views, meadows, & wildflowers. We may make a loop by returning via Bean Pk & Bean Creek Basin.

August 2-8 (Sun-Sat) Whatcom Pass-Middle Lakes (North Cascades NP)

A 6 day backpack to one of the most spectacular spots in the North Cascades. Details in future newletters.

August 6-9 (Thurs-Sun) West Fork Foss River Lakes

This is the region for which the Alpine Lakes Wilderness was named. Deep forests, raging rivers, large lakes, eager trout. Bob plans on hiking up the WF Foss into the Chetwood Lakes area and do a little poking around. Give him a call.

CLIMBING
Participants must be properly equipped with 13 essentials, food, proper clothing, shelter, etc. Helmets are required on all Cascadian climbs. Most climbs require completion of Basic Climbing Course or equivalent experience, and knowledge of rope handling, knots, ice axe and crampon use, and general glacier travel. Contact leaders well ahead of the trip or you may be turned down.  Good physical conditioning required. Car poolers expected to share expenses. Basic Climbing Class starts at YVCC in mid May. Taught by Central Washington Mountain Rescue. See our Classes page for details.

Climbing Chairman position open. The Cascadians are currently without a climbing chairman. If interested contact a board member.



CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING
Beginner: Fairly flat, short. Easy: Up to 5 miles and 1000 ft elevation gain, moderate terrain, requires ability to get up from a fall, ski ungroomed snow, snowplow. Intermediate: Up to 10 miles and 1500 ft elevation gain. Advanced: More than 10 miles and 1500 ft elevation gain.

Tuesday Skiers: Meet at 40th Avenue BiMart at 8:00 AM Tuesdays. Destination determined at the meeting place by participants.

REMINDER: Many cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trailheads require a Snopark Permit. You can pick one up at many local merchants. $30 for the season.

Avalanche Forecasts: You can get updated avalanche forecasts and weather information at the Northwest Weather and Avalanche Center website http://www.nwac.noaa.gov



BICYCLING
Participants must be properly equipped with  food, water,  proper clothing, repair kits, and a spare inner tube. Helmets are required on all Cascadian bike rides. Rated as Easy - up to 15 miles, fairly level; Intermediate - 15 to 40 miles, moderate terrain; Advanced - over 40 miles, steep/hilly terrain.

CAMERA CLUB
The Cascadian Camera Club meets the 2nd Monday of every month at 7:00 at the Alliance Church, 902 S 36th Ave. Please go to the upstairs entrance on the south side of the building. Bring slides, digital images on disc, or prints to share or just come to enjoy great photography.
