Cascadian Activities
Cascadian sponsored activities include mountaineering, hiking, backpacking, cross-country skiing,snowshoeing,bicycling, canoeing, kayaking, and whitewater rafting. All participants must contact the trip leader and obtain permission. All participants of a club-sponsored outing are required to read and sign a release of liability form; participants under the age of 18 must have a parental signature on the release form; those under the age of 14 must also be accompanied by a responsible adult. Club outings are for Cascadian members and their guests only. Refer to your Cascadian newsletter for a meeting time and place.

Difficulty: 4 miles 500' elevation gain
This July planned hike is rescheduled for August due to the late melting of snow. One of the best summer hikes for wildflowers plus a spectacular view of Mt. Rainier. Bring lunch, water, flower guide, hiking poles, sun protection, insect repellent and Northwest Forest Pass. Call Claudia.

TUESDAY HIKERS: Meet at 40th Ave Bi-Mart June - Sept. at 7:30 am and Oct - May at 8:00 AM. Upper-easy to Advanced trips. Usually a “fast” and “slower” group. Switches to skiing and snowshoeing when snow arrives. For a complete schedule of hikes, pick up a yellow Dayhike Schedule at a regular monthly meeting.

TUESDAY TOO and SUPER POKIE HIKES: Cascadians are welcome to participate in alternate Tuesday and Thursday hikes. These hikes (ski/snowshoe in season) are generally rated as “intermediate.” Destination and departure times are determined by consensus the day before or morning of the hike.


The POKIES
Hikes of 4 to 8 miles with no great elevation gain. May include x-country skiing or snowshoeing in winter. Call leader in advance.

Be sure to check the Herald-Republic Outdoors section Tuesday before the hike - and call the leader to find out about last minute changes. BE SURE YOUR GOLDEN AGE PASSPORT IS IN YOUR CAR OR WALLET. Hikes are a varying distances from Yakima and leaders can’t accurately predict a back-to-Yakima time. Plan to be gone ALL DAY!!

Stephanie will lead the hike around Naches Peak and Jon will take the sturdier hikers down to Dewey Lake and back. Lunch, water, proper equipment, Golden Age Passport. Call the appropriate leader. Thanks to Stephanie, Jon and Mary Sublett for switching Naches Peak and Sheep Lake hikes because of snow conditions.

Cascadian Trail Maintenance Projects
Two days of volunteer trail work on supervised projects earns you a Northwest Forest Pass good for 12 months. Work is available or all abilities.  Interested Cascadians contact Bill Munson @ 697-7128 or Munsonjb@charter.net.


BACKPACKING
Participants must be properly equipped with 13 essentials, food, proper clothing, shelter, etc. Contact leaders well ahead of the trip or you may be turned down.  Car poolers expected to share expenses. Map key: GT = Green Trails; FS = Forest Service; USGS = U.S. Geologic Survey.

August 20-23 (Fri-Mon) "Gisela's Delight" - Upper Int-Adv

Tentatively selected as Robin Lakes and the Granite Mountain Ridge. Camp at Robin (7 mi., 2800' gain). Dayhike the nearby lakes or along the ridge toward French Potholes and Paddy-Go-Easy Pass. There will be a foul-weather alternate trip that weekend. Flexi-day: Advanced backpackers (only) who are squeezed for vacation time from work should call the leader well in advance to arrange a 3-day itinerary and coordinate rides, campsites, etc. By permission of leader only.

Camp on a meadowed bench high above McCall Basin with great close-up views of the Goat Rocks. Day hikes may include the Coyote Ridge Trail and the PCT along the Goat Rocks crest.

We will take the Lady of the Lake up Lake Chelan to Lucerne & ride the bus up to Holden & hike a mile or so before setting up camp. On Fri we will go up to Upper Lyman Basin below Spider Gap and spend 2 full days day hiking. On Mon we will hike out to Holden, but it will probably be too late when we arrive to catch the boat, so we will most likely return to Yakima on Tue. The views & fall color should be spectacular.

Oct 8-11 or 15-18 (Fri-Mon) Alpine Larch Spectacular

The exact dates & destination of this trip will depend upon the weather. Rather than schedule a specific date & then have to cancel if the weather is bad, David is building in the flexibility to take advantage of whatever window of good weather presents itself.


CLIMBING
Participants must be properly equipped with 13 essentials, food, proper clothing, shelter, etc. Helmets are required on all Cascadian climbs. Most climbs require completion of Basic Climbing Course or equivalent experience, and knowledge of rope handling, knots, ice axe and crampon use, and general glacier travel. Contact leaders well ahead of the trip or you may be turned down.  Good physical conditioning required. Car poolers expected to share expenses. Basic Climbing Class starts at YVCC in mid May. Taught by Central Washington Mountain Rescue. See our Classes page for details.

Climbing Chairman position open. The Cascadians are currently without a climbing chairman. If interested contact a board member.



CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING
Beginner: Fairly flat, short. Easy: Up to 5 miles and 1000 ft elevation gain, moderate terrain, requires ability to get up from a fall, ski ungroomed snow, snowplow. Intermediate: Up to 10 miles and 1500 ft elevation gain. Advanced: More than 10 miles and 1500 ft elevation gain.

Skiing; please remember to call the leader a day or two before to sign up, get meeting time, location and any other needed info.

Tuesday Skiers: Meet at 40th Avenue BiMart at 8:00 AM Tuesdays. Destination determined at the meeting place by participants.

REMINDER: Many cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trailheads require a Snopark Permit. You can pick one up at many local merchants. $30 for the season.

Avalanche Forecasts: You can get updated avalanche forecasts and weather information at the Northwest Weather and Avalanche Center website http://www.nwac.noaa.gov



BICYCLING
Participants must be properly equipped with  food, water,  proper clothing, repair kits, and a spare inner tube. Helmets are required on all Cascadian bike rides. Rated as Easy - up to 15 miles, fairly level; Intermediate - 15 to 40 miles, moderate terrain; Advanced - over 40 miles, steep/hilly terrain.

CAMERA CLUB
The Cascadian Camera Club meets the 2nd Monday of every month at 7:00 at the Alliance Church, 902 S 36th Ave. Please go to the upstairs entrance on the south side of the building. Bring slides, digital images on disc, or prints to share or just come to enjoy great photography.
